Feel like you’ve been there, done that?
GIE+EXPO Brings Something New to Tradeshow’s Education

GIE+EXPO is known for its educational sessions which provide attendees with best practices and strategies to increase their bottom line. And this year, GIE+EXPO is adding more value by giving contractors the chance to participate in a Hardscape educational session.

“This is a unique learning opportunity for lawn & landscape professionals,” said Warren Sellers, show director. “This introductory session will give lawn & landscape professionals the chance to explore how they can add hardscaping to their service offerings and increase profits.”

A full program of education and certification for lawn & landscape professionals and hardscape installers will be sponsored by the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) and Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI). But you can explore how hardscaping services can add to your profits by attending, “Adding Hardscape Installation to Your Company’s Success,” Thursday or Friday. The session – led by Pat McCrindle, one of the top trainers in the U.S. – will teach you about equipment, training and capital investment required, the best structure for your work crews and how to promote your new services. As a bonus for signing up for either session, you will receive free access to a series of eight live demos on Thursday and Friday afternoon. Demo topics will cover compaction for paver installation, outdoor living enhancements, basic paver installation, water features, stone veneer applications, permeable pavement construction, raised patio contraction and segmental pavement maintenance.

Green Industry Conference asks, “Are you committed to being successful?”

PLANET’s 2010 Green Industry Conference (GIC) will be enhanced this year by a wide range of topics covering interlocking concrete pavement, clay brick pavement, segmental retaining walls and articulating concrete block systems. Learn more about the full course offerings at www.GreenIndustryConference.org. Just want a sample of PLANET’s educational offerings? Then register for the always popular GIE+EXPO Workshops.

Thursday, October 28, Ed Laflamme with the Harvest Group will lead, “Xtreme Service = Xtreme Profits,” geared towards teaching participants how to make customers love you through improved customer service.

Kevin Kehoe with Kehoe and Company will teach participants the secrets behind “Growing Revenues in a Crowded/Price-Driven Market” on Friday, October 29. Kehoe recognizes the greatest challenge facing the majority of contractors is growing revenues in a price-driven market while achieving net profit goals but says it is possible!

On Saturday, October 30, national award-winning landscape contractor Marty Grunder will teach participants how to find clients in this environment and get them to do business with you during “27 Tips to Making Some Sales RIGHT NOW!”

For even more education, check out the Professional Grounds Management Society’s (PGMS) School of Grounds Management. Open to professional grounds managers, this education tract provides grounds managers with the opportunities to learn the latest from renowned faculty, establish a dynamic network of peers, expand career horizons and move toward becoming a Certified Grounds Manager.

Increase your bottom line and enhance your overall tradeshow experience by attending the many educational sessions offered at GIE+EXPO 2010. GIE+EXPO 2010 will be held Thursday-Saturday, October 28-30, 2010 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, KY. GIE+EXPO is the 14th largest tradeshow in North America according to Trade Show Executive magazine. GIE+EXPO is sponsored by OPEI, PLANET and PGMS. Establishment Watering of New Planting
by Gregg O’Connor

General Recommendation

Thoroughly soak entire root masses of newly installed nursery stock and the soil surrounding the root masses to the depth of the root masses. One inch of water will wet a sandy soil to an approximate depth of one foot.

Frequency (after initial thorough watering-in)

• Weeks 1 thru 4- every other day

• Weeks 5 thru 8- twice weekly at 3 to 4 day intervals

• Remainder of Establishment Period- once every 7 days

• Establishment Periods (A plant is considered established in its’ transplanted site if and when its’ root system extends into and is fully developed in the surrounding soil. Only then can it be expected to perform at its’ maximum drought tolerance.)

Trees and Palms- 6 to 12 months per inch of trunk diameter

• 1 Gallon Plants- 3 to 6 months

• 3 Gallon Plants- 6 to 12 months

• Sod- 30 days

Degrees of Drought Tolerances

• Xeric plants= those requiring no supplemental moisture to thrive, once established Example: Cabbage Palm

• Moderately Drought Tolerant Plants= those requiring occasional supplemental moisture, once established- Example:  Hibiscus

• Oasis Plants= those requiring frequent supplemental moisture, even when established- Example: Impatiens

• Even the most drought tolerant or drought loving plants require establishment watering, as outlined above. Pay close attention to amounts of rainfall at the given site, before deciding whether or not to skip a watering.

Over watering, causing root, crown or stem rot, is possible. The operator must gauge watering frequency and quantity based on factors such as nursery growing medium; soil; drainage; type of plant and weather conditions.
