Cold Damage and Plants in the Landscape
by Gregg O'Connor, Charlotte County Public Works

Generally speaking, plant materials to be installed outdoors should be selected for the precise USDA Plant Hardiness Zone. These range from zone 1 to zone 11 on the continent of North America. The basis for zone designation is the average annualminimum temperature of an area. In the case of Charlotte County, Florida for instance, zone 9B indicates that minimum temperatures of 25 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit will be the norm. Coastal parts of the county are considered zone 10A. For purposes of this article, plants refer to trees, palms, shrubs, grasses, vines, ground covers, annuals, perennials, vegetables and all other plant life categories.

Following are factors, besides plant type, which affect cold hardiness.

  • Plants in containers are particularly more prone to cold damage, partly because roots are only minimally protected from soil or growing medium.
  • Plants close to structures may receive benefit from radiant heat.
  • Plants which are beneath canopy may be damaged less than their more exposed counterparts.
  • Plants which are in a good water status, i.e. not wilted or drought stressed prior to the freeze are more apt to endure the conditions.
  • Plants which are not otherwise stressed, such as by nutrient deficiencies are more apt to survive better.
  • Plants which are located close to a water body are somewhat buffered from cold temperatures.
  • Plants which are in a location close to asphalt or concrete are likely to benefit from radiant heat.
  • Plants which are dormant, rather than actively growing at the time of the cold event will receive less cold damage.
  • Marginally hardy plant materials will vary in the damage they receive, based on other factors.
  • Plants located in low elevations receive colder conditions than those on higher ground.
  • Duration of cold temperatures is key as to the extent of damage which will occur.
  • Whether or not the wind is blowing when coldest temperatures occur determines whether frost settles and extent of plant damage.
  • Those exposed to early morning sun will be more damaged than those not receiving that exposure.
  • Plants in moist soil are better off than those in dry soil, since water resists  temperature fluctuation better than air does.

Following are some feasible measures of protecting tender plants, when cold temperatures threaten.

  • covering with sheets or blankets (These must be removed in the morning for best success.)
  • bringing plants into a protected location, even an unheated garage
  • applying at least a third of an inch of water per hour through an overhead irrigation system to cover above ground tissues with protective ice.
  • keeping a thick layer of mulch over root systems of tender perennial plants (The objective here can be to allow the under ground parts to survive and regrow the next growing season.)

Many tropical and sub tropical plants grown in Southwest Florida will freeze severely, perhaps even to the ground, if temperatures of 28 degrees Fahrenheit or less occur for more than a few hours.

Pruning of cold damaged plant parts is recommended only after March 1st in Southwest Florida, since previously frozen tissues may blanket viable tissues beneath, so the plant may regrow upon return of more favorable conditions.
