GIE+Expo Feature Article

GIE+EXPO Announces New Products Arena will Showcase Innovations - Online Directory of Exhibitors will be available June 1

Exhibitors and attendees at the 2009 GIE+EXPO (Green Industry & Equipment Expo) will benefit from the introduction of the New Products Arena, an enhanced feature on the tradeshow floor.  The Arena will be a larger and more comprehensive take on last year’s popular New Products Live!

Show Director Warren Sellers said, “Research indicates the No.1 reason people attend this tradeshow is to see new products. The New Products Arena will highlight those and serve as a great orientation area for an overview of the latest items.”

Exhibitors will have a chance to introduce new products to attendees and the press on the Arena Stage during scheduled times. The new products will also be displayed in the Arena throughout the show.

The GIE+EXPO press center will be moved to the show floor, adjacent to the Arena allowing for easier access for the press and participating exhibitors.

Sellers also announced that a new, enhanced website that includes an online directory of exhibitors, will be available June 1. A Standard Listing will be free to all exhibitors – a $95 value. Three other listing options, Silver, Gold and Platinum, will be available to exhibitors and will vary in price. Some new features of the various levels will include increased company profiles, company logos, trackable hyperlinks to websites, new product listings and more.

Sellers said the online directory will benefit attendees as well by providing a research and planning tool. “Attendees can use it to map out their strategy for tackling the indoor show floor and the hands-on demonstration area,” he said.

The GIE+EXPO is set for Thursday, October 29 – Saturday, October 31 at the Ky. Exposition Center in Louisville.  It is sponsored by the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, Inc. (OPEI), Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) and the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS).

Pre-registration for a three-day pass to GIE+EXPO is $10 per person. To pre-register online and reserve hotel rooms, go to www.gie-expo.com.  The tradeshow admission for those who wait to register onsite will be $50.

Historic Tabard Inn Uses Plants in a Most Contemporary Fashion
Sarah Murphy, Canopy, LLC

For over 25 years the Tabard Inn, near Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., has attracted locals and visitors alike for its garden courtyard, quirky interior and amazing food. The menu changes with the season, with a majority of the food originating from nearby farms. Always interested in staying ahead of trends, Irene Mayer, the Inn’s In-house designer, started looking into growing vegetation on their numerous rooftops in 2007. She approached Canopy, LLC (www.greenroofcanopy.com) about incorporating green roofs onto their buildings.  Canopy is a small company that specializes in restoring the Urban Canopy through green roofs and city gardens, executed the job with a knowledgeable, creative flair.

First, the Inn wanted to add a small roof over their outdoor serving area, and consulted with Canopy regarding the feasibility of installing an herb garden green roof on it.  Canopy suggested specific building guidance; as the roof needed to be strong enough to hold 12-18 inches of growth medium to support the specialty herbs.  After design discussions, the Inn also decided to install a skylight hatch with a pull-down ladder in order to increase accessibility of the garden to the kitchen staff.  A hose bib was also added for water access.

Once the outdoor serving area roof was constructed, Canopy started their green roof installation with a membrane made of ethylene propylene diene M-class rubber, or EPDM, a common waterproofing material.  Next, they installed a root barrier made of high-density polyethelene. In a step that created the look of a traditional herb garden, Canopy then constructed numerous wooden boxes out of rot-resistant cedar in varying depths.  These wooden boxes are artfully arranged, and accommodate a variety of herbs and other herbaceous plants.  Each of the wooden boxes was filled with a specially blended growth medium comprised of 60% lightweight aggregate, 10% aggregate fines, and 30% organic matter.

The 150 square foot roof was then planted with Lemon verbena, two varieties of low-bush blueberry, rosemary, chives, thyme, mint, sage, basil, and two varieties of climbing roses.  The roses were requested by The Tabard’s owner, Jeremiah Cohen, who has an office that overlooks the new roof top herb garden.

Overwhelmingly pleased with the roof top herb garden, the Tabard approached Canopy again in the spring of 2008 in order to initiate the design and installation of to two more green roofs.  The Inn roofs selected were in need of new waterproofing anyway, so the Inn thought the time and investment timely.  Canopy eagerly accepted the new projects, but there were a few challenges along the way.

The first challenge with the new roofs was that they both have a 5/12 pitch, meaning each roof is angled at nearly 45 degrees.  Erosion and soil slumping become an issue at only a 2/12 pitch, so Canopy had to utilize special materials to prevent soil slippage off the deeply pitched roofs.  They decided to employ a technique used by German Manufactures at Optigrun: plastic “bananas” that latch onto a geo-textile mat installed on the roof.

The plastic “bananas” are approximately two inches deep, and hold two inches of soil in place.  They also have spikes to hold pre-vegetated mats in place.  The mats, which are similar to common sod, were grown at a nursery in Stevensburg, Virginia with a variety of sedums.

The installation of the soil and pre-vegetated mats was a slow and laborious task exacerbated by the fact that the restaurant remained open for outdoor dining.  Canopy was required to coordinate the installation between meals.  Because of the intermittent nature of the job, the roughly 350 square foot installation took about two total weeks.

The Inn now boast the finished three green roofs – including the innovative vegetable garden boxes, and offer a verdant view for guests.  Additionally,  the green roofs provide insulation benefits, reducing energy bills and helping reduce storm water run off.  The kitchen has also realized cost savings by reducing the need to buy expensive specialty herbs.
