Planting Techniques That Work In The Long Run

By Gregg O'Connor

Plant material purchased for landscaping can represent significant monetary outlay. Hence, it makes sense to put forth the initial effort necessary to get plants to serve their intended purposes, for the anticipated length of time. Prerequisite to success with plants (trees, palms, shrubs, vines, ground covers, flowers, etc.) in the landscape is proper planting of them into the earth. Although pests; disease organisms; chemicals; cultural practices; weather and more can cause plant problems, perhaps most problematic are those caused by humans…often in method of planting.

Some of the most common planting problems encountered are: planting of root balls too deeply inthe soil; root balls planted too shallow in soil with portions exposed to air; “planting” into mulch rather than into soil; planting with containers or fabric still affixed to the root ball; planting of root bound plants without severing of encircling roots; back fill soil with air pockets in planting hole; planting into holes barely large enough to fit root balls into; mulching too deeply and over stems; insufficient initial watering-in of newly planted stock; planting into holes which have had their sides virtually “sealed”, disallowing water to drain outward.

Almost anybody can make a planting look great, upon installation. However, getting plantings to look better with age should be the goal. A suitable root environment is a key to healthy above ground plant parts. Here are some suggestions for getting plants off to a good start, in the process of planting (assuming proper selection of plants for the location has taken place).

• Plant into holes that are much wider than the “root balls”, unless the soil in the entire
  bed has been loosened.
• Plant into holes that are only slightly deeper than root ball heights.
• Plant into soil, not into mulch.
• Save all soil dug from planting holes on a tarp or in a container, so that it is all
  retrievable for back filling.
• Back fill planting holes with the same soil as that within the planting bed.
• Plant entire root balls under soil, but not so deeply that stem tissue is buried.
• Leave no air pockets in soil used to back fill planting holes.
• Moisten root balls thoroughly, prior to setting plants into planting holes.
• Make vertical slices into root bound root balls prior to planting.
• Water new plantings generously to thoroughly moisten all soil around newly
  planted root balls.
• Add soil to fill where watering-in has settled it below the desired level.
• Make sure all stems and leaves are above soil and mulch level.
• Mulch new plantings only after final soil level has been achieved, after watering in.
• Mulch should be 2 to 4” deep but not touching stems.
• Firmly tamp bottoms of planting holes that were dug too deeply for the particular root ball.
• Where drainage is poor, root balls may be planted one third above grade, in soil,
and soil graded slightly over tops of root balls.
• Remove containers or root-containing fabric from the root mass.
• Plant only into beds or rings that are separate from lawn grass areas and mulched.
• Fertilize with an appropriate fertilizer product for the type of plants being installed.
• Keep soil and root balls consistently moist until plants are established.
• Where plants are being replaced in existing mulched beds, pull mulch well away
  from digging sites.

Continuing Education Opportunity 1

ISA 2008 Conference & Trade Show
July 26 – 30, 2008
St. Louis, MO USA
America’s Center Convention Complex

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Steven Sillett

The Structural Dimensions of Tall Tree Growth

The tallest conifer, Sequoia sempervirens, can exceed 115 meters in height and the tallest flowering plant, Eucalyptus regnans, reaches 97 meters. Sillett and his team climbed 15 trees of each species, including short, medium, and tall individuals, and measured all trunks, limbs, and branches. These data were used to develop 3D models of tree crowns and to accurately estimate total amounts of bark, wood, cambium, and leaves. After one year, they re-measured all branch diameters and collected cores from main trunks to quantify annual growth. In both species, growth was positively correlated with tree size. Whole-tree growth was also correlated with an independent dimension related to a tree's energy balance. In S. sempervirens, trees with more sapwood volume and heartwood surface area per unit leaf area produced more wood, but had lower rates of top growth. In E. regnans, trees with more cambium per unit leaf area produced less wood and had lower rates of top growth. Unlike E. regnans, S. sempervirens maintains sapwood to support shaded leaves and invests heavily to protect its wood from decay, factors that contribute to longevity.

Dr. Steve Sillett, Professor and Kenneth L. Fisher Chair of Redwood Forest Ecology, Department of Forestry and Wildland Resources, Humboldt University, Arcata, CA. Biography: Professor Stephen C. Sillett, Kenneth L. Fisher Chair in Redwood Forest Ecology at Humboldt State University, is recognized as the foremost expert on redwood trees. Sillett and his students changed the way scientists looked at redwood forests when they began climbing the trees and discovered crowns supporting a rich community of life. Sillett’s pioneering research and findings have been chronicled in scientific journals such as Nature, American Journal of Botany, Ecological Monographs, Ecological Applications, Bryologist, and Northwest Science. His work has been profiled in books (e.g., Richard Preston’s The Wild Trees and Robert Van Pelt’s Forest Giants of the Pacific Coast), magazines (e.g., The New Yorker, Discover, New Scientist, and National Geographic), television (National Geographic’s Wild Chronicles, BBC’s Planet Earth, and PBS’s Oregon Field Guide), and film (MacGillivray-Freeman’s Adventures in Wild California). In 2006, Sillett was named Humboldt State University’s Scholar of the Year.
