USCC Sponsors Session at LandsConference
The US Composting Council is sponsoring "Use of Organic Materials in the Landscape: Compost 101" at LandsConference. The USCC is a trade and professional organization promoting compost. They provide a unified voice for the growing composting industry. The Council is involved in research, public education, composting and compost standards, expansion of compost markets and the enlistment of public support.
Session LC04 - 9:30 to 11:30 (Eastern Time)
Use of Organic Materials in the Landscape: Compost 101 - Sponsored by USCC
William Baker, Representing UCR Extension
Ronald Alexander, US Composting Council.
The recycling of organic residuals into commercially marketed compost products has become much more prevalent across the U.S. The most widely available compost products are derived from yard trimmings, biosolids and manure, with both municipal and private composting facilities now producing products in almost every state. There a wide range of applications and benefits of using composts and organic mulches in the landscape. Golf courses, parks, large landscapes, and home lawns can all utilize organic amendments, but for different applications and in different compositions. Since the landscape, turf and even agricultural sectors are struggling with plant loss, increased input costs, and water management issues, compost can play a more vital role in improving both soil and plant health.
William Baker is a Certified Golf Course Superintendent and a Certified Arborist. He is a licensed pest control advisor and he holds a pesticide applicators license. He received his Bachelors Degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Redlands. He is the consultant for Green Industry Programs, and a course instructor, at University of California Extension at Riverside. He has written over 60 articles on trees and turf. He provides training and consulting services to all areas of the Green Industry through his company, William Baker and Associates LLC.
Ronald Alexander is a horticulturist with over 20 years of experience working with compost and other organic recycled products. He is also the President of R. Alexander Associates, Inc., a consulting company specializing in product and market development for organic recycled products. Before becoming a consultant, Mr. Alexander was Vice President of Marketing for a firm specializing in the marketing of composted products. He has also authored the ‘Field Guide to Compost Use’, and ‘Landscape Architecture Specifications for Compost Utilization’, and is currently co-managing the US Composting Council’s Seal of Testing Assurance Program.

Empire Riding Mower Washer
Empire Products, Inc.
The Empire Riding Mower Washer is a brand-new device for effectively cleaning grass clippings from under the mower deck on large, riding mowers with the use of a common garden hose. After cutting grass, simply park the mower on a flat surface, hook the mower washer to a garden hose, and place it under the deck prior to turning on the water pressure. Raise the mower deck to its highest setting, and engage the mower blades to high speed. After only a few minutes of operation, the underside of the mower deck appears to have been "power washed."
