STMA Sponsors Sports Turf Track at LandsConference
For the second consecutive year, the STMA is sponsoring the Sports Turf Track at LandsConference. The association celebrated their 25th anniversary earlier this year at their conference in Orlando, Florida. The Sports Turf Managers Association was officially formed in 1981.
LandsConference is a continuing education program featuring live sessions with prominent speakers from both private industry and education/government institutions. An unique program because it is held both on-site and filmed as a live web broadcast for online attendees. It is also one of the first to have sessions with multiple national accreditations. Attendees can double or even triple dip on their continuing education requirements.
Sports Turf Track Sponsored by STMA
Friday, October 6, 2006 in Louisville Kentucky or
Online at LandsConference.com
Session LC01 - 9:30 to 11:30 (Eastern Time)
Water Quality Issues in Sports Fields
Shoumo Mitra, Ph.D., Cal. State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Mike Huck, Irrigation and Turfgrass Services
As fresh water supplies become increasingly scarce due to urban expansion, turf and landscape managers will be forced to accept and learn to manage alternative irrigation sources. Irrigation sources such as brackish groundwater, recycled wastewater & storm water runoff will no longer be the exception but the rule. These sources are often of variable and/or of poor quality. Once only a localized problem of coastal and arid regions, irrigation water quality has now reached the forefront of issues that turf and landscape managers nationwide must face. The quantity and quality of irrigation water are limiting factors in maintaining high-quality turf grasses for landscapes, golf courses and sports fields all over the world. An overview of basic irrigation water quality parameters and an understanding of guidelines to identify specific problems with total salts, sodium, chlorides, bicarbonates and other dissolved ions that affect management when working with alternative water sources.
Session LC02 - 12:30 to 2:30 (Eastern Time)
Technology Update for Sports Fields
Tom Samples, Ph.D., University of Tennessee
Bill Paproki, Stabilizer Solutions
New products and technologies may improve turfgrass health, reduce wear injury, insure player safety, conserve water or lower management costs. Several innovations, products and a look at the newer technologies will be discussed with both the past and the future in mind. See how the turf playing fields are grown outdoors and moved indoors on game day.
Session LC03 - 3:00 to 5:00 (Eastern Time)
Practical Maintenance of Sports Fields
Trent Hale, Ph.D., All Star Turf, Inc.
Dale Getz, The Toro Company
Maintaining Warm and Cool Season Sports Fields include the basics of mowing, watering and fertilizing as well as pest control (weeds and insects) and aerification, topdressing, and verticutting. The demand for use of sports fields continues to increase along with the expectation of providing a safe, playable and aesthetically pleasing playing surface.

Bandit Model 1990 Hand-fed Chipper
Bandit Industries, Inc
Bandit's model 1990 hand-fed chipper effectively processes large-diameter forked trees. This unit was fashioned after the popular model 1890, but features a wider drum and a larger chipper opening that measures 26.5 inches high by 24.5 inches wide. The standard model 1990 is equipped with a powerful feed system, and is available with engine options up to 140 hp. The heavy-duty version has engine options up to 250 hp., and is equipped with an even stronger feed system, similar to that on Bandit's whole-tree chippers.
BANDIT INDUSTRIES, INC. / 800-
952-0178
JP Carlton Line of Chippers
JP Carlton
JP Carlton offers 6-inch (model 1260), 9-inch (model 1790), 12-inch (model 2012) and 18-inch (model 2018) wood chippers for a variety of landscape, tree maintenance and land clearing applications. Heavy-duty construction -- including a form-welded frame, Torflex axle strength and construction-grade tires -- is a standard on all Carlton chippers models. Carlton chippers feature high-speed, dynamically balanced disk rounds for maximum chipping power. Every Carlton chipper includes a specially designed hydraulic system with a single integrated manifold for optimum control and convenience. The hand crank swivel discharge allows users to easily adjust chip flow positioning to best suit any application.
JP CARLTON / 800-243-9335
Dynamic Manufacturing Cone-Head and Discone Chippers
Dynamic Manufacturing
All Cone-Head and Discone chippers feature the patented tapered drum design. This shape produces a chipping action that is, by design, 21 to 63 percent more efficient than conventional designs. Direct benefits of the tapered drum are longer knife life, lower fuel consumption, less horsepower, easier feeding, overall lower operating and maintenance costs. Dynamic Manufacturing offers 10 different models ranging from a 10-inch model with 65 hp. up to a 21-inch with 325 hp. Standard on all units are Dupont Imron paint, heavy-duty construction, auto feed, oversized wide infeeds, adjustable swivel discharge, plus many other options.
DYNAMIC MANUFACTURING / 989-644-8109
Morbark Hurricane 18
Morbark
Standard on the Hurricane 18, which is also available with loader and platform, the reversing auto feed increases productivity and engine efficiency. This system makes it possible to not only stop the feed system, but also to briefly reverse the material away from the drum. This allows the chipper to regain its rpm even quicker, resulting in increased fuel economy. The Hurricane, with an 18-inch-diameter chipping capacity, withstands rigorous daily abuse. The Hurricane is equipped with a durable, height-adjustable, 360-degree discharge chute, and with replaceable knife holders on the drum.
MORBARK, INC. / 800-831-0042
Rayco Brush Chippers
Rayco Mfg.
Rayco Manufacturing's 6-inch disk brush chipper, the RC 6D, features 25-hp. Kohler V-twin engine that produces torque ratings of 39.5 foot/pounds at 2,800 rpm. The RC 6D brush chipper is ideal for rental applications due to its enhanced safety features and economical performance. Reversing auto feed keeps the RC 6D at the correct rpm level to create more uniform chips; uses less fuel; and minimizes vibration, which reduces wood shifting to keep the operator safer. The RC 6D brush chipper is easily towed behind a pickup truck and its highway lighting features conform to federal motor vehicle standards.
RAYCO MFG. / 800-392-2686
Vermeer Offers BC1400TX Brush Chipper on Rubber Tracks
Vermeer Manufacturing Co.
The SL1600 utilizes patented technology to save water and protect landscaping. Features include easy dial programming; a large, easy-to-read, backlit display; 1 button manual program start; hot swappable zone modules; on-board multi-meter with visible volt/amp diagnostics; and a valve locator function. The SL1600 can be used as a conventional timed watering controller in the standard mode. With the optional SLW20 on-site weather station, it can also be used in the auto adjust mode for weather-based watering schedules. Based on independent field studies, SmartLine water savings can be 24 to 28 percent or more over the course of a year.
